Jet lag, we’ve all had it, and absolutely hate it! Whether it is a business trip or a vacation, no one likes tossing and turning around at night; and roaming around all groggy during the day. Here is a collection of a few tips compiled by the frequent travelers, to deal with this phenomenon called jet lag.

First things first, do not look back: You are here and that is what matters, do not think about what time it is back home. It is going to make the whole adjustment bit so difficult. You need to be settled in your head first in order to settle for real. Set your watch according to the new timezone and do everything according to the local timezone.

Aim for gradual adjustment: Start adjusting little by little, at the least 3-4 days prior to the trip. It is going to be so much easier than getting the entire dose of timezone change all of a sudden. There are quite a few tools that can help you plan this. Timeshifter app is a good option. Also, websites like jet lag rooster are a good alternative.

Let the light guide you: The light has a huge impact on your circadian rhythm aka your body clock. If you reach the destination in the morning, drop your luggage and go for a small jog around your hotel. Expose yourself to that magical sunlight. If it is night time, put on your pajamas and go to sleep. Even if you are not sleepy just lay down in complete darkness( no screen light at all), and you will eventually drift off to sleep.

Be gentle on yourself: Dealing with jet lag does take some time, so if possible do not schedule something major for the first 24 hours after you land. If you are short on time, being friends with melatonin supplements and caffeine will help.

Convert layovers in stopovers: When crossing too many timezones, this trick comes in handy. A stopover at some location midway, makes timezone adjusting relatively easier. This is definitely easier said than done. You need to have a visa for that location, you need to have extra days to spare, above and over your holidays; and the extra funds too. On the flip side, if you manage to do so, you will be ticking off one more location off your list.
