Temporary crowns and bridges provide protection to the newly treated teeth and keep them in place until the permanent crown is fixed. It is very important that they stay intact until the final restoration is ready. These temporary crowns are made from Acrylic-based materials and have very little strength. Below listed are a few foods you should avoid to protect your newly treated teeth and the temporary crown both.
Sticky foods: Foods like chewing gum, jelly beans, and chewy toffee act like glue and have a pulling effect on the crown or the bridge and this effect can loosen the restoration or even worse detach it from the prepared tooth.
Hard foods: As discussed, these temporary crowns and bridges are very delicate and cannot take very heavy forces. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid hard foods like nuts, raw vegetables, and hard candies until the permanent crown or the bridge is ready.
Exceptionally hot and cold foods: These acrylic crowns aren’t very good at protecting the tooth underneath from hot and cold sensations. And with the newly treated teeth so sensitive, it is best to let go of the foods that are very cold or very hot.
Sugary foods: Sugars are known to cause acute sensitivity. And even otherwise, they are very harmful and make your teeth more susceptible to caries. So, try and control your sweet tooth until the permanent restoration has settled in the mouth.
That being said, let’s take a look at some foods you can easily eat when you have a temporary crown or a bridge in your mouth. Smoothies, puddings, pasta, boiled vegetables, soups (not too hot), rice dishes, curries, and bread are good options to opt for during this intermediate period.
Happy crowning!!
