Ever wondered why do you feel so serene and calm after chanting “Aum”? How this small a word can have such a profound effect on your minds. Let’s explore the science behind how Aum works on our bodies and minds.

Aum chanting has been traditionally practiced in the Indian culture since eons and eons of years. It is now the Neuroscientists and other health experts have conducted researches and experiments to confirm the benefits this magical chanting has to offer. Before we get into discussing the benefits, let’s understand the mantra ‘Aum’ or ‘Om’ as most of us know it.

How is it pronounced?

The trisyllabic Sanskrit word ‘Aum’ has traveled far and wide. During its journey, it has, unfortunately, become Om. And even today, a lot of yogis start their day with Om Chanting, which isn’t as beneficial as it’s original version Aum.

The chanting happens in three parts. When put into words, it would look somewhat like this- Aaa-uuu-mmmmm. This chant has more benefits than the blended ‘O’ sound in Om.

What are the benefits of Chanting Aum?

The feel-good factor of Aum dwells in the vibrations it produces. When pronounced correctly, it gives rise to sequential positive vibrations starting from the abdomen to the head region.

Vibrations start in the navel and the abdominal area. The second area of focus is the chest cavity. The vibrations in the chest region are maximum felt during the uuuu part, or the central of Aa-uuu-mmm. Moving forward these vibes reach the throat and the skull region. Repetitive chanting leads to sequential activation of all the organs from the stomach to the brain. Here are some benefits it has:

It reduces stress and anxiety: Aum Chanting is proven to regulate the heartbeat, deepen breathing, and calm your mind. It is a very good way to destress after a hectic day. It can also do wonders as an anti-anxiety activity before starting the day.

It helps improve focus and concentration: When you Chant Aum (or mantra of your choice), your mind gets focused on this one thing. A person gets detached from other distracting thoughts. Over a period of time, this concentration improves and helps you accomplish daily tasks with ease.

It improves sleep quality: Sleep quality is inversely proportional to the stress quotient in one’s life. By regular chanting, sleep quality can be improved significantly.

It regulates biological functions like breathing, heartbeat, and digestion.

Enhances lung Function, and detoxifies the body.

Where and how should you practice Chanting?

It can be practiced at any time of day, at any place of your choice. It is advisable to grab hold of a quiet place, with a calm and serene ambiance. It can be your backyard, your bedroom, or a temple. You can even do it in the car before leaving for work.

Once you find your spot, sit comfortably in any meditative posture like sukhasana, or padmasana. Keep your spine erect and relax your shoulders. Close your eyes, and, you’re good to go!!

Yes I have been chanting Aum. Thought I am not consistent doing it. The Experience was good. But I didn’t know about it’s scientific benefits as stated except for a Mind calming and concentration. Will definitely get back to it. Thanks 😊
